Dodo Payments review (2026): the fees, the payouts, the fine print

Dodo Payments is a Merchant of Record built for AI-first companies — global tax handled in 220+ countries, individuals welcome. That part is real. What the homepage doesn't show: how the fee stack behaves at AI-app ticket sizes, how payouts actually work, and what merchants report when risk review happens after the money is collected. Everything below is sourced from Dodo's own pricing page, docs and public reviews (as of July 2026).

What Dodo gets genuinely right

Merchant-of-Record tax remittance across 220+ countries and territories, 40+ payment methods including UPI and local rails, and onboarding open to individuals and emerging-market founders — if you sell globally from, say, India, Dodo solves problems paas.build currently doesn't (we onboard UK, EU and US businesses). The fee stack, verified

The pricing page says "4% + 40¢ per transaction." The additions matter: +1.5% for international cards, +0.5% for subscriptions, +3% for PayPal, $1 per refund, $30 per dispute, $5 fee on payouts under $1,000, $25 for USD SWIFT. Payouts run bi-monthly (sales from the 1st–15th pay out on the 18th; 16th–end-of-month on the 4th) with a $50 minimum. Sources: dodopayments.com/pricing · docs — payouts

Fair caveat: Dodo's fee includes tax remittance (they are the Merchant of Record); paas.build's does not — you remain the seller and handle your own tax, with tooling.

"Minutes, not months" — read the fine print

The homepage promise refers to integration. Going live is a different clock: identity + business verification "typically takes 24–72 working hours," longer under manual risk review, plus a product-approval gate — products can be rejected, with one appeal and the appeal decision final. Who owns your money?

This is the structural question with any MoR: the customer legally buys from them, so the funds, the risk posture and the account's survival are theirs. Dodo's Trustpilot profile scores around 3/5 "Average" (~122 reviews), and the recurring theme in negative reviews is accounts suspended after collecting payments — before the first payout — with funds held for 120 days:
"Customer payments were collected successfully, then the account was suspended before my first payout and funds were held for 120 days."
"They told us the payment would be released after 120 days — but months have passed and we still haven't received a single cent."
Dodo's official response confirms the mechanism: the hold is "a requirement under card network rules to account for dispute and chargeback exposure." That's a legitimate policy — and exactly the asymmetry you accept when someone else is the merchant. Source: Trustpilot — Dodo Payments (quotes from public reviews, July 2026; experiences vary)

When Dodo is the right call — and when it isn't

Pick Dodo if you're outside the UK/EU/US, or global tax-handled matters more to you than fees and account ownership — that's the honest MoR trade.
Pick paas.build if you're a UK/EU/US builder and the sentence in your head is "I want to charge today, keep my brand and my customer, and pay one flat rate." Progressive KYB opens a real merchant account — sandbox and production — the same session, individuals included. 3.9% flat: no fixed fee, no subscription surcharge, no refund fee, no small-payout fee. You stay the merchant on FCA-authorised rails with safeguarded client funds. And if your product's users need to get paid too (marketplaces, communities), splits and payouts are native — something a single-merchant MoR structurally can't do.
FAQ

How much does Dodo Payments really cost?

Published base is 4% + $0.40. With the international-card surcharge (+1.5%) and subscription surcharge (+0.5%) a $9 monthly subscription costs $0.94 = an effective 10.4%; via PayPal it reaches 11.9%. Refunds cost $1, disputes $30, payouts under $1,000 carry a $5 fee. Source: dodopayments.com/pricing.

Is Dodo Payments instant onboarding?

Integration is fast, but verification "typically takes 24–72 working hours" (longer with manual review) plus a product-approval gate. By comparison, paas.build opens a real capped merchant account the same session via progressive KYB, with verification completing in the background.

Does Dodo Payments hold funds?

Multiple public Trustpilot reviews describe accounts suspended before first payout with funds held for 120 days; Dodo's response attributes the hold to card-network dispute-exposure rules. Standard payouts are bi-monthly with a $50 minimum.

What is the best Dodo Payments alternative for AI builders?

If you are a UK, EU or US builder who wants to stay the merchant: paas.build — a live merchant account the same day, 3.9% flat with no fixed fee, your brand on the checkout, and platform payouts/splits. If you need worldwide tax handled for you or are outside those regions, an MoR (Dodo, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy) remains the right category.
