Dodo Payments does a lot right - 220+ countries from day one, 40+ payment methods, tax and compliance handled for you as a Merchant of Record, and onboarding that's genuinely quick for the category. If selling into India and emerging markets with local methods is your priority, it's a strong pick. But at AI-app ticket sizes the fee stack tells a different story, and the payout terms - a $50 minimum, a small-payout fee, and a standard 120-day hold - are where margins quietly go. Everything below is from Dodo's own pricing page, docs and public reviews (July 2026).
| Scenario | Dodo fee | Effective | paas.build (3.9% flat) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $9 subscription (US card) | $0.81 | 8.9% | $0.35 = 3.9% |
| $29 subscription (US card) | $1.71 | 5.9% | $1.13 = 3.9% |
Published: 4% + $0.40 per transaction on US cards, plus 1.5% for international cards and 0.5% for subscriptions - an effective 8.9% on a $9 subscription. Payouts add a $5 fee under $1,000 (and $25 for non-US SWIFT), run bi-monthly with a $50 minimum, and disputes cost $30. Sources: dodopayments.com/pricing and docs.dodopayments.com.
Verification typically takes 24-72 working hours per Dodo's docs, after which live mode opens. It is fast for an MoR, but it is not same-session. paas.build opens a live capped account the same session via progressive KYB.
Structurally yes - as a Merchant of Record, Dodo holds your funds and pays out bi-monthly (around the 18th and 4th). Dodo states a standard 120-day hold applies under card-network rules for dispute exposure, and public 2026 reviews on Trustpilot describe accounts suspended before a first payout with funds held 120 days. Dodo says funds are never held arbitrarily; the structural point stands - on an MoR it was never your account.
If you are in the UK, EU or US and want to stay the merchant: paas.build - live the same day, flat 3.9% with no fixed, subscription or payout fees, your brand on the checkout, platform payouts for your users. If you need worldwide tax remitted for you, compare Dodo with Paddle and Polar on our MoR guide.
