Polar alternative: the fee math, the account review, the faster path

Polar is one of the most genuinely developer-friendly products in this space - open source, API-first, a clean SDK, usage-based billing built for the AI era, and tax handled for you as a Merchant of Record. If open source and modern billing primitives are what you care about most, it's an easy one to like. But the 2026 pricing change moved the free plan to 5% + $0.50, and at AI-app ticket sizes that fixed 50c bites hard - before the account review and the Stripe-based payout fees. Everything below is from Polar's own pricing page, docs and public reviews (July 2026).

The fee stack, verified

As of the 2026 restructure, the free Starter plan is "5% + 50c" for organizations created on or after May 27, 2026. That fixed 50c is brutal at small tickets - a $9 AI subscription lands at 10.6%:
ScenarioPolar Starter feeEffectivepaas.build (3.9% flat)
$9 subscription$0.9510.6%$0.35 = 3.9%
$29 subscription$1.956.7%$1.13 = 3.9%
To get the old 4%-style economics you now subscribe to a paid tier - Pro $20/mo (3.8% + 40c), Growth $100/mo (3.6% + 35c), or Scale $400/mo (3.4% + 30c) - so the "cheaper rate" only pays off above real volume. Organizations created before May 27, 2026 keep a grandfathered Early Member rate of 4% + 40c (+0.5% for subscriptions), but "once you upgrade to a paid plan, the Early Member is retired for your organization" - permanently. On top of the rate, international cards add 1.5%, disputes cost $15, and because payouts run through Stripe you also pay $2 per month of active payouts, plus 0.25% + $0.25 per payout and a cross-border fee (0.25% in the EU, up to 1% elsewhere). Access and approval

You can wire up Polar in test mode quickly, and the open-source, API-first developer experience is a real strength. Going live is the gate: before your first payout you go through Polar's account review, and their docs say "initial reviews can take up to 14 days to complete, depending on volume, weekends, and holidays." Polar also runs "asynchronous reviews of accounts at certain sales thresholds", so your account "may go through multiple reviews as your business grows." If your launch is this week, plan for that window. Sources: Polar docs - account reviews

Who owns your money?

As a Merchant of Record built on Stripe Connect, Polar is the legal seller - the funds are theirs until paid out, on their risk policy. Their docs are candid about the mechanics: a payout request made while your organization is under review "shows as 'Held for review' until approval, then is paid out automatically", they hold accounts to a "0.4% chargeback rate", and if thresholds are breached they can "hold payouts pending review, until the 120-day chargeback window for those transactions has closed." Public 2026 reviews on Trustpilot include a merchant reporting their account was closed after about one week without a clear reason, and a February 2026 Reddit thread flagged Polar as slow to respond on support. Polar's process is more transparent than most; the structural point still stands - on an MoR it was never your account. When Polar is right - and when it isn't

Pick Polar if open source, an API-first developer experience and worldwide tax handled for you matter more than fees and account ownership, and your volume is high enough that a paid tier's lower rate offsets its monthly fee. The product is genuinely well-built for developers.
Pick paas.build if you're a UK/EU/US builder who wants to charge today and stay the merchant: progressive KYB opens a real account (sandbox + production) the same session, individuals included. 3.9% flat - no fixed fee, no plan tiers to unlock a better rate, no separate Stripe payout fees, no payout minimum. FAQ

How much does Polar really cost?

The free Starter plan is now 5% + $0.50 per transaction for organizations created on or after May 27, 2026 - an effective 10.6% on a $9 subscription. The old 4% + $0.40 economics now require a paid tier (Pro $20/mo, Growth $100/mo, Scale $400/mo) or a grandfathered Early Member rate you lose permanently if you upgrade. International cards add 1.5% and disputes cost $15. Source: polar.sh/resources/pricing.

Is Polar instant onboarding?

You can start in test mode quickly, but before your first payout Polar runs an account review that its docs say can take up to 14 days, and further reviews trigger at certain sales thresholds. paas.build opens a live capped account the same session via progressive KYB.

Does Polar hold funds?

Structurally yes - as a Merchant of Record built on Stripe, Polar holds your funds. Payout requests made while your organization is under review show as "Held for review" until approval, and if thresholds are breached Polar can hold payouts until the 120-day chargeback window closes. On an MoR it was never your account.
