Square alternative for online payments: the 2026 fee hike, the reserve terms, the faster path

Square is excellent at what it was built for - walk-in retail, a card reader, a clean point-of-sale, fast signup. If your business is mostly in-person, it's a fair default. But for online, invoicing and software payments the numbers moved in January 2026: the free plan's card rate went up, the same-day money costs extra, and the reserve terms are written to let Square hold your cash. This page is only about the online side, and everything below is from Square's own fees page, Payment Terms and public reviews (July 2026).

The fee stack, verified

On January 13, 2026, Square raised online and invoice card rates on the free plan from 2.9% + $0.30 to "3.3% + 30¢". You only get the old 2.9% + $0.30 online rate by paying for Square Plus at $49/month per location. Keyed-in / card-on-file is 3.5% + $0.15. Here's how the free-plan online rate lands at software ticket sizes:
ScenarioSquare Free (online)Effectivepaas.build (3.9% flat)
$9 subscription$0.606.6%$0.35 = 3.9%
$29 subscription$1.264.3%$1.13 = 3.9%
Then payouts: standard next-business-day transfers are free, but instant and same-day transfers cost 1.95% per transfer - so cash-flow-today stacks on top of the card fee. ACH via invoice is "1%, $1 min" (a $10 cap only on paid plans). For a small online seller the free-plan 3.3% + $0.30 plus a 1.95% instant transfer can quietly beat 5% all-in. Access and approval

Signup is genuinely fast - that's a real Square strength. The friction comes after volume starts: the risk model can suspend an account or impose a reserve on "abrupt sales spikes, high refund/chargeback ratios, product-category sensitivity, fulfillment delays, or identity/compliance gaps". For an online or software business whose whole model is a sudden launch spike, those are exactly the triggers - and phone support is reported to be available only for the first 90 days after account creation, with slower help once a hold is in place. Who owns your money?

Square is your payment processor, and its terms are explicit about control of your cash. Section 14 of Square's Payment Terms lets Square withhold funds by "temporarily suspending or delaying payouts of Proceeds" and designate an amount you must keep in a Reserve. Public 2026 reviews describe reserves holding 20-30% of revenue for 90-180 days, and individual reports of accounts deactivated with sums such as $10,000 held for 90 days "without explanation". Square frames this as covering potential chargebacks, whether or not they ever occur - the structural reality is that on a processor account, the funds sit on their risk policy, released on their timeline. When Square is right - and when it isn't

Pick Square if your business is mostly in-person retail or hospitality and you want its hardware, POS and fast walk-in signup. For a coffee shop or market stall, it's a genuinely good all-in-one.
Pick paas.build if you sell online, invoice, or run a software or platform business in the UK/EU/US and want the money in your name without a monthly plan or a reserve hanging over a launch spike: progressive KYB opens a real account (sandbox + production) the same session, individuals included - no company needed. 3.9% flat - no $49/mo to unlock a better rate, no 1.95% instant-payout surcharge, no reserve games. Your brand on the checkout, your customer, your funds on FCA-authorised safeguarded rails - and platform payouts if you pay out your own users. Agent-native too: SKILL.md, llms.txt, and an MCP server on the official registry.
