Stripe Express alternative for platforms and creators: the per-account fees, the control question, the faster path

Stripe Connect Express is the industry benchmark for a reason - embedded onboarding, Stripe handling KYC, a hosted dashboard for your sellers, and reach across 50+ countries. If you're building a marketplace and want the fastest way to pay many users, it's a genuinely excellent tool. But it's worth being clear-eyed about two things: the per-account and per-payout fees add up, and an Express account is a Stripe-managed sub-account the platform controls, not a merchant account the seller owns. Everything below is from Stripe's own pricing, docs and support pages (July 2026).

The fee stack, verified

Connect Express bills the platform "$2 per monthly active account" (any month a payout is sent) plus "0.25% + 25¢ per payout sent", on top of card processing that starts at 2.9% + $0.30. The percentages look tiny per account until you multiply by users and payout frequency - and the fixed $0.25 per payout bites hardest on small, frequent payouts:

$20 weekly payout$2/mo + $0.30/payout~4.5% of monthly payoutno per-account or payout fee
$100 monthly payout$2/mo + $0.50/payout~2.5% of payoutno per-account or payout fee
On top of that, Instant Payouts add a 1% fee, cross-border payouts start at "0.25% of payout volume", and US 1099 tax forms cost "$2.99 per 1099 e-filed with IRS" (plus $1.49 per state). None of these are hidden - but for a platform with many small sellers they compound into a real line item that a flat rate simply doesn't have. Access and approval

Onboarding is fast and embedded - Stripe collects KYC and bank details inside a hosted flow, which is the real draw. The wait is on the money: Stripe applies a 7-day waiting period "for connected accounts from the time of first charge to the first payout", and it "can be up to 14 days for businesses in certain industries and up to 30 days in countries such as Brazil". After that, balances pay out "on a daily rolling basis" - unless the platform reconfigures the schedule. So your seller can be onboarded in minutes but still wait a week or more for their first cash. Who owns your money?

An Express account is a Stripe-managed connected account the platform provisions - the seller gets a limited Express dashboard, not a full account in their own name. The platform sets the payout schedule, can apply "application fees" or "account debits" against the balance, and can place rolling or fixed reserves that "temporarily prevent portions of connected account balances from being paid out". Stripe's own Trustpilot rating sits around 1.7/5, and public 2026 reviews describe funds held for months with limited explanation - a director reporting funds from an April 2026 payment still unpaid "after over four months". Whether the seller sees the platform or Stripe as the cause, the structural fact holds: on Express, the account and its reserve policy belong to the platform, not the person earning. When Stripe Express is right - and when it isn't

Pick Stripe Express if you're building a marketplace that needs the broadest global reach and the most polished embedded onboarding, and you're comfortable owning the platform-side compliance plus the per-account and per-payout costs. It's the category standard for good reason.
Pick paas.build if you run a platform in the UK/EU/US and want each user to be a real merchant rather than a managed sub-account, with the fee math flattened: progressive KYB opens live accounts (sandbox + production) the same session, individuals included - no company needed. 3.9% flat - no $2-per-account monthly fee, no 0.25% + $0.25 per payout, no instant-payout surcharge. Platform-style payouts to your users, your brand on the checkout, funds on FCA-authorised safeguarded rails. Agent-native too: SKILL.md, llms.txt, and an MCP server on the official registry.

Stripe applies a 7-day waiting period for connected accounts from the first charge to the first payout. It can extend to 14 days for higher-risk industries and up to 30 days in some countries.
